Basketball - Academy Women Back on Track with SESSA Cup Victory
SESSA Women's Cup Final - HCCA 91 v 40 Hertfordshire University
The Community College's Women's Basketball Team made up for just missing out on a medal in the British Colleges National Finals with a comprehensive 50 point victory over Hertfordshire University in the SESSA Cup Final at SPACe last Wednesday. Herts Uni fought hard all the way but didn't have the forward power to challenge The Academy girls.
The first period was dominated by Ellenor McGhie and Jade Harris who combined to score 15 of HCCA's 19 points and open up an 11 point gap that increased to 23 points at half time (42-19) with Carlene Harris hitting scoring form. For Herts Uni, the excellent Richards battled hard at point guard along the combative Bryne and main points scorer Shalika Choudry to try and curb The Academy
With key Herts Uni players in foul trouble, Fiona Scarlett and Captain Achai Biong dominated the second half scoring as HCCA surged to victory, but not before Herts Uni put in a 7 point run at the start of the 3rd quarter with Dixon leading the way. All Academy players registered points, lead by Biong with 19, Scarlett 16 and "Woman of the Match " Jade Harris hitting 13 and controlling the play. For Hertfordshire, Choudry top scored with 12, supported by Richards with 7 and Dixon (6).
As with the recent victory in the SESSA Men's Cup over Chichester Uni, Hertfordshire never gave up and fought extremely hard throughout. The match was played in an excellent spirit. The Women now need to complete victories over Winchester University College and SEEVIC to secure the SESSA Premier League Title for the 3rd successive year.
The Senior Men resume LMBL Premier League action this week with matches against Hoxton, Camden and MacPro from South London. Three wins should put The Academy in a strong position to retain their London Met League Title. The Under 19 Men face Cardinal Newman College (Preston) in the Final of the English Schools National Academies Cup in early May. Cardinal Newman defeated Moulton College by 3 points in the semi-final last week.
