News Update - April 2007

21st April 2007 - TARICK JOHNSON EARNS BBL ALL-STAR SELECTION..

The BBL All-Star Team for 2006/07 has been announced and is as follows:

1= Jeff Bonds (Sheffield Sharks)

1= Brian Dux (Poujoulat Heat Guildford)

3 Mike Martin (Poujoulat Heat Guildford)

4 Carlton Aaron (Kularoos Plymouth Raiders)

5 Rob Yanders (Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks)

6 Blake Shelton (Sheffield Sharks)

7 Jaz Cowan (Chester Jets)

8= Sterling Davis (Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks)

8= Tarick Johnson (London United)

10 Fab Flournoy (Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles)

The team is compiled according to votes from the ten head coaches of BBL clubs.

Behind the league’s joint Molten Players of the Season came two dominating big men in Mike Martin and Carlton Aaron.

Martin, who was a Commonwealth Games bronze medal winner with the England team in 2006, is the captain of the double-winning Poujoulat Heat Guildford. Their talisman was fifteenth in the league’s scoring charts with 16.25 points per game and sixth in rebounding at 9.36rpg.

Aaron, meanwhile, is the BBL’s leading rebounder, snatching an astonishing 12.43 boards per game. He was the MVP as the Kularoos Plymouth Raiders lifted the BBL Trophy, the first piece of silverware in the club’s history, at the MetroRadio Arena in March. He had 25 points and 12 rebounds in that 74-65 defeat of the Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles.

Completing the top five is another point guard, Rob Yanders of the Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks. The BBL veteran was influential as his team finished fourth in the BBL Championship, and were runners-up in the BBL Cup. He scored 16.88 points per game and was second in the league in assists with 5.65 each outing.

Blake Shelton was voted in sixth after a startling season for the Sheffield Sharks. He was the league’s eleventh leading scorer with 17.14 points per game, came ninth in assists with 3.72apg, and fourth in steals with 2 each game.

Jaz Cowan, the league’s leading scorer with 23.07 points per game, came in seventh. The Chester Jets missed out on the playoffs, perhaps largely due to the injury that saw Cowan miss much of the latter end of the campaign.

There was a tie for eighth between the league’s second leading scorer (22.75ppg), and Great Britain hopeful, Tarick Johnson of London United, and Sterling Davis of the Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks.

Fab Flournoy has led the Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles from the front this season and he completed the BBL All-Star team. The Eagles will be looking to retain one of the four trophies they won last campaign as they head into the BBL Championship Playoff semi-finals on good form.
