The league-leading Milton Keynes Lions opened their BBL Trophy campaign successfully with a 83-78 defeat of London United.
It was the Londoners that started the game the better as a Marlin Capers three-pointer capped a 7-0 opening, prompting a time-out from Molten Coach of the Month Tom Hancock. The Lions responded through Michael New and Kevin Griffin who scored 4 and 5 points respectively but still trailed 18-24. Terrell Brown and Dru Spinks nailed consecutive triples to tie the game at 24 before United scored the last bucket of the first period.
The game was tight throughout the second and the teams could barely be separated, a late free-throw saw United take a 38-39 lead into the locker rooms.
United took charge early in the third but back-to-back treys from Brown saw the Lions take the lead at 57-56 and they still led by one at 59-58 going into the decisive stanza.
London had regained the advantage at 64-65 before Lions' point guard Terrell Brown took over, he scored 8 points in an 11-0 burst that left the score at 75-65 with 2:00 minutes remaining. Despite two late three-pointers, United couldn't get back into it from there.
Brown had an outstanding night with 24 points and 11 assists, ably supported by 17 points and 14 rebounds from Shawn Jamison. Bryant Feggins led the visitors with 22 points.
