Poujoulat Heat Guildford remained at the summit of the BBL Championship table thanks to a 88-81 victory over London United at the SPACE Centre on Saturday night.

After a close opening half, in which the home side led 46-44 at the half, the Heat enjoyed a 12-2 burst at the start of the third quarter to take the score out to 50-56, and maintained that lead at 57-63 going into the final stanza.

In the final period, the Heat once again extended their lead at the start of the quarter thanks to a 11-4 tear, which gave them a 75-62 lead. London valiantly attempted to get themselves back into the game, and an 8-0 burst midway through the period trimmed the deficit to eight points at 76-68.

With Heat guard Brian Dux fouled out they struggled to control the pressure from United’s guards and London got even closer in the final minute at 84-79, before the visitors were able to secure the victory from the foul-line.

February’s BBL player of the month Tarick Johnson led all scorers with 27 points for London, while Daniel Gilbert led the Heat scoring with 25 points personal.

United remain in contention fro the playoffs with 10 wins and 18 losses in 8th position. Only the top 8 qualify for the playoff’s and it has always been United’s intention to be competitive and make the playoffs in their inaugural season in the BBL.

United travel to Newcastle Eagles this Friday for a huge test with the Londoners next playing at home on the 18th March against Leicester Riders who are perched one place above United in 7th spot with an 10-17 losing record.
