Community News Update - September 2006

September 29th, 2006 - LONDON UNITED sponsor Eltham CE School..

Sport in Greenwich has received a huge boost with the Eltham CE primary school winning a sponsorship deal with basketball professionals, London United.

The BBL basketball league team - who are also supporting Greenwich schools’ basketball league - will be working with schools in the five Olympic boroughs More good news for Greenwich is that they are planning to make the O2 their home stadium within the next few years.

Eltham CE, the borough’s basketball champions who will have London United on their shirts, will be taking a coachload of supporters to United’s first home game against Sheffield Sharks at Hackney on Saturday, October 21.

Pupil Lewis Foster told Greenwich Time: “It’s really good that we’re doing lots of things with London United this year. The whole school is excited about them coming in. “I have only started playing basketball this year but I really enjoy our training sessions at the Waterfront in Woolwich.”

Schoolmate Nicole Sigler said: “I can’t wait for our first trip to see London United play and seeing their skills.”

Max Peterson loves the new kit. He said: “We look really cool and I feel really professional.”

Saphari Bernard added: “I am excited about playing against other schools in the borough. I think I will learn a lot from watching London United play.”

Peter Rhodes, the school’s PE co-ordinator, said: “We’ve got professional coaches who come into school and also take training four evenings a week. The children love it and we make sure they all achieve something within their ability group. “We all talk to the children about the need for sport. We also encourage them constantly to keep fit and healthy. I lost weight when I took on this job because I didn’t want to ask them things that I wasn’t

doing myself.”

Former national league player Matt Delaney, Sport England’s London director, joined the Eltham CE players at their Thursday afternoon training session. He said: “I think this is fantastic. I never played

basketball in primary school. To see so many young boys and girls playing is really good. “I used to teach at Blackheath Bluecoat and taught both Rio and Anton Ferdinand, but to see it at this age is great. You can tell how much the children like it by the smiles on their faces.”

Cllr John Fahy, cabinet member for culture and the Olympics, said: “This sponsorship is wonderful for Eltham CE and for the borough as a whole. It gives a tremendous boost to our campaign to link sport and healthy living in our Olympics borough.”
