London United Basketball Club, the aims and the future of basketball in London..

ABOUT THE CLUB..

London United was established in the summer of 2002 ,and has gone from strength-to-strength ever since.

In our first year we entered EBL Div 2 and in the first year, we won promotion to EBL Div 1. We have spent 3 years in that division and our biggest success came in season 2004-05 when we finished as runners up. The logical progression for the club was to join the fully professional British Basketball League (BBL) in July 2006, a decision hastened by London being left without a professional basketball team after the withdrawal from the BBL by London Towers.

We are the only professional basketball Club in the Capital. We see that as both a huge opportunity, but also an enormous privilege and responsibility to represent London basketball in the best and most progressive way possible.

London United is currently the only professional basketball club in London playing in the British Basketball League (BBL). We are currently based at SPACe Centre in Shoreditch, just north of The City (London Borough of Hackney) both geographically and spiritually

right at the heart of London 2012 Olympic territory.

Let there be no doubt that we have a burning ambition to represent the entire basketball community in London.

THE FUTURE..

For several years London United has produced a great number of ultra-talented players who had to ply their trade at other professional clubs in England or abroad. London United will provide the most talented home grown players with the opportunity to showcase their skills at the highest level. Our ambition is to secure permanent participation in European Competitions, organizing top quality basketball events and aspiring

to make the 02 Arena (formally the Millennium Dome and an Olympic Basketball venue) our home within the next two years. Our mission is to provide London, a “world class” city, with a world class professional basketball team.

THE GOAL..

Such high aspirations can only be achieved by forging a variety of strategic partnerships. London United is working with

several European and English companies which sponsor the club. London in general and East London in particular has one

of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world. The new communities from Eastern Europe have adeep and strong

basketball tradition. To reflect and serve these new “basketball literate” communities, we are co-operating and linking with

top European sporting clubs like Besiktas Istanbul JK (Turkey) and Atletas Kaunas (Lithuania) to bring in top-quality players

as well as working with all kinds of media accessed by these new communities.

THE COMMUNITY..

As well as our extensive contacts with European and other corporate partners, we understand

that the key to success dependsmainly on our involvement with local communities. The grass roots

work of London United is deeply woven into fabric of boroughs right across the Capital

(Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Greenwich, Newham, Ealing and Richmond).

Our main community programmes, Hoops for Health and Dunk the Junk cover around 200

schools in above mentioned boroughs. Our community programmes not only provide strong

sporting expertise and coaching but also enable schools and community groups to gain access to

educational programmes covering healthy living, crime prevention other social issues.

THE JUNIOR PROGRAMME..

There is no exaggeration in saying that London is one of the most exciting pools of natural athletic talent in

the world. To nurture that basketball talent and help it's progression we have closely supported two of the

top British Basketball Academy programmes at Richmond College and Hackney Community College. Both

academies are modeled on European Schools of excellence where top athletes can combine education with

everyday training. Both Academies participate in Junior National, College and Schools competitions and have

dominated these over the last 8 years, producing many junior international players on the way. The Hackney

Programme currently holds 5 out of the possible 6 National Titles for men and women at U19 level and is based

at our new home venue, SPACe. On the top of the domestic schedule, our Junior Programme participates in

prestigious tournaments in USA, Canada, France, Holland and Poland. England Basketball has recently awarded

us the prestigious “Club Mark” reflecting both the strength of our organization and quality of our development programme.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTNERS..

We are looking for companies in London who are interested in partnering with us and sharing our ambition to grow and promote basketball in

the Olympic Boroughs. The next 5 years will bring some exciting times to sport and we want to be instrumental in bringing a high profile Olympic sport to the youth of today and the athletes of tomorrow.
